Optical distribution of satellite signals vs. distribution by coax cables

According to the AG SAT (Working Group on Satellite Reception), satellite reception systems with optical components are increasingly supplementing conventional coaxial cabling. One of the key benefits of optical components is the virtually loss-free signal transmission over longer distances. This enables their use in large multi-user systems with as many channels as possible, such as in multi-dwelling units or even in underground car parks.

Another benefit is that there is no metal screening involved in optical distribution systems so that the question of potential differences, e.g. between buildings, is no longer relevant. Plus, there is no need for additional amplifiers.

This means that optical distribution systems are not only more economical, they also help to save energy.

What is more, the transmission is safe from interference and enables the use of large bandwidths. Optical distribution systems can easily be combined with conventional coax technology and can thus effectively supplement or expand coax networks, including the feeding of terrestrial signals.

However, the processing of optical components is often much more demanding than that of coaxial cabling. The professional handling of fibre optic cables requires specific expert knowledge and skills. The right products and innovative installation systems will help to take this hurdle.

Easy installation with a CLIK!

The appeal of the CLIK! system we use at Kathrein lies in the ease of handling the thin cables as well as in the design of the very narrow CLIK! connectors with slide-in guides. Hearing the CLIK! connector lock into place is an immediate confirmation that a perfect connection has been made – from the transmitter and the space-saving distribution material to the receiver.

The “CLIKulator” calculation tool

The “CLIKulator”, a sophisticated calculation tool, makes the planning of optical satellite distribution systems even easier – with just a few mouse clicks. The scalable optical satellite distribution system consists of optical transmitters, matching optical receivers and all necessary passive distribution components
